N8N, What's That All About?

Tell Me About N8N

N8N (pronounced "n-eight-n" or "nodemation" if you want to sound fancy). It's a tool that lets you connect your applications together and create automations. In other words, it's the conductor of your digital tools.

Picture this: you receive an email with an attachment. Today, you have to manually download the attachment, rename it, file it in the right folder, maybe forward it to someone else, and update a tracking spreadsheet. That takes you 5 minutes. Multiply by 20 emails a day, and you've lost nearly 2 hours of your life on a repetitive task.

With N8N, you create a "workflow" (a chain of actions) that does all of this automatically. The email arrives, and poof: the attachment is filed, renamed, shared, and tracked without you lifting a finger.

Of course, automation isn't new. We've had Zapier and Make, we've had no-code and low-code enthusiasts. But in the age of AI, automation takes on a whole new dimension.

Why N8N and Not Something Else?

There are dozens of automation tools out there: Zapier, Make (formerly Integromat), Power Automate... So why are we talking about N8N?

Three main reasons:

• It's open-source. That means you can host it yourself, on your own servers, with your data never leaving your company. For certain industries (banking, healthcare, manufacturing), that's non-negotiable.

• It's visual. You build your automations by dragging and dropping "nodes" (blocks that represent actions). You don't need to be a developer to understand what's happening.

• It's powerful. Unlike some "no-code" tools that hit their limits quickly, N8N lets you go much further, including custom code when needed.

What's It Actually Used For?

• A recruitment firm that automatically syncs applications between LinkedIn, their ATS, and their CRM

• A manufacturing SME that gets Slack alerts when a sensor detects an anomaly
